The Sophie Shawl in Autumn Berry Colour

I loved knitting my first Sophie Shawl so much that I decided to jump right in to knitting another one.

This time instead of the gorgeous Devonia DK in Amber Blaze from John Arbon, which was my premium pick, I've gone for an everyday 100% BFL yarn from Knit (by World of Wool). If you're looking for affordable but natural yarn, this is a solid option and I have to say, it's lovely to knit with.

Sticking with the autumn vibe, this shade is a deep, rich plum or berry colour, because autumn isn't just about the browns and greens and oranges. Let's have a moment for the berries!

You can knit the Sophie Shawl on either circular or straight needles. For this project I started off using my old straight Knit Pro Symfonies but ended up with KnitPro Mindful Collection Believe interchangeable needles. I bought these as a treat to myself for launching my business and my goodness, they are so lovely to knit with! I wish I had bought some sooner.

I thought I would get away with one skein or this project but lost at yarn chicken. Luckily I had a somewhat similar colour in stash so I completed the tip with a different yarn. It's not perfect but I'm OK with that! I would recommend that if you're making a Sophie Shawl then you buy two skeins or alternatively weigh it as you go and make sure you are decreasing before you hit the halfway point.

Shawls in general are a great autumn project, especially the range of small shawls/skinny shawls like the Sophie that are popular these days. Quicker to knit than a garment, they're easy to customise with striping, adding texture or even lace, to really make them your own. And as the seasons change, it's always helpful to have something good for layering.

Next up, I will try a Sophie Shawl in one of the other DK yarns we stock - Wooltrace DK, or maybe Warth Mill. They all use different fibres, so it will be interesting to compare them side by side. Are you casting on a Sophie Shawl this season, and if so, which wool would you choose?
